All mixed up! Watched from July 25th to July 31st

What a mixed bag this weeks viewing was! Nine films watched: Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014), Dobermann (1997), Citizen Kane (1941), Sick Girl (2007), Oculus (2014), Mystery Road (2013), Blue Ruin (2014), The Colony (2013), and Atrocious (2010).

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014)
Found footage horror documenting strange happenings in a small residential building in Los Angeles. It’s like Paranormal Activity (2007) meets Chronicle (2012) meets Mi Vida Loca (1993). There’s a somewhat contrived link to the first movie in there too.

Dobermann (1997)
Starring Vincent Cassel and the eminently watchable Monica Bellucci, this violent tale of a gang of brutal bank robbers versus some really nasty cops, is what you’d expect if Takashi Miike was French.

Citizen Kane (1941)
Not bad, but I can’t wait for the reboot. Rob Zombie should definitely do it…

Sick Girl (2007)
Some gory bits try, but fail, to save this indie flick from a horrible dose of bad acting. The Sick Girl of the title does pee on a nun at one point, so if that’s your thing…
Score: 45

Oculus (2014)
Above average horror set across two time periods, and featuring a creepy mirror. Plenty of ‘is this really happening’ moments to keep you on their toes.

Score: 70

Mystery Road (2013)
A slow burning thriller set in the Australian outback which highlights plenty of social issues. Not edge of the seat stuff but engaging nonetheless.
Score: 75
July 28 2014

Blue Ruin (2014)
A thoughtful and believable revenge film that’s somewhat reminiscent of ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’.
Score: 75

The Colony (2013)
Not a bad low budget science fiction flick. I feel sorry for Bill Paxton though; he must be sick of Aliens references by this stage…

Atrocious (2010)
Occasionally tense found-footage horror from Spain. The subtitles were distracting at times.
