Heavy on the Heroes. Watched from 1st of August to 7th of August 2014

Three superhero movies (kind of), some dystopia, a music video, animation, and more… the eleven movies watched were: Calvary (2014), The Purge: Anarchy (2014), The Zero Theorem (2014), Death of a Superhero (2011), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Metallica Through the Never (2013), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), The Signal (2014), Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014), Divergent (2014), and Ride Along (2014).

Calvary (2014)
A perfect drama with just the right amount of dark comic undertone to make the heavy subject matter more digestible. Brendan Gleeson is at his best playing the good, yet all too human, priest, and the supporting cast don’t miss a beat.

The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
Ahh, The Purge. What a great concept, in movie franchise terms, you know? I really enjoyed the first installment but I felt Anarchy took it up a notch. I’m curious about where they’ll take it next. Will they venture outside the cities? Maybe a deeper exploration of the quasi religious organisations? Anyway, stay safe.

The Zero Theorem (2014)
I’m still giving Gilliam points for Twelve Monkeys. I should stop. Big thumbs up, ahem, for Melanie Thierry, but otherwise this was a scatterbrain effort.

Death of a Superhero (2011)
A dark coming of age drama in which a young teenager comes to terms with his own mortality.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Pretty standard superhero fare. A smidgen too long. Nothing to push this into the realms of the amazing.

Metallica Through the Never (2013)
I’m rating this as a movie because that’s what I sat down to watch. Utterly disappointing.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
I’m still unsure if I like this one more than the last. I’m still unsure of the point in doing a reboot of a franchise so soon after a previous reboot. Ah well. The action scenes are fantastic, the Spider-Man quips are there, and I enjoyed the fleshed out back story about his Dad. Yet I’m still unsure…

The Signal (2014)
Enough good ideas and eye-catching visuals to make you believe something exceptional was just over the horizon. Unfortunately the ending leaves you standing there with your d**k in your hand.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014)
Good for keeping the wee ones entertained on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

Divergent (2014)
Okay, obviously we’ve got ‘Hunger Games’ here – that comparison is unavoidable – but you can also see a hint of ‘Harry Potter’ and a pinch of Sookie Stackhouse plane-jane-ness. All that and a meandering plot gives you this junk. Oh, and apparently it’s the first part of a trilogy…

Ride Along (2014)
Pants. Used. Possibly soiled. Why did I think this was a good idea? (Scratches head)
